Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association Sotanki Tea Ceremony

The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Sotanki Memorial Tea Ceremony on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the Kansoan Tea Room of Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California), located in San Francisco’s Japantown. This tea ceremony gathering honored the third generation Grand Master of Urasenke School of Tea, SEN Sotan (1578-1658).

The tea ceremony event was hosted by TSUJI Sona and her students, who prepared tea for 60 guests over three separate seating sessions.

Sokei Perri served as teishu (host), and Soka Deng served as hanto (assistant) for the first seating that started at 10:30 am. Deputy Consul General ISHIHARA Takeshi and his wife, Mrs. ISHIHARA Aya, were the first and the second guests, and Soei Bartlett, Director of the Urasenke Foundation San Francisco Branch, was the third guest. The event started with hanayose, the offering of flowers, by these three honored guests.

FUKUMURA Sochoku served as teishu, Soka Deng served as hanto, and HAGIWARA Sojin was the first guest for the second seating.

Sokei Perri served as teishu, Soka Deng served as hanto, and Soyo Pusic was the first guest for the third seating.

All of the guests enjoyed a wonderful tea ceremony to memorialize Sotan and his many contributions to Urasenke School of Tea.
