Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association Mugenki Tea Ceremony
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Mugenki Memorial Tea Ceremony on August 14, 2022, at the Kansoan Tea Room of Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California) located in San Francisco’s Japantown. This annual tea ceremony gathering honors the 14th generation Grandmaster of Urasenke School of Tea, SEN Tantansai (Mugensai) (1893-1964).
The Sokyo Tiscornia and TAKECHI Soko Shachu hosted the tea, the first Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association gathering since the COVID pandemic began. Forty-seven members and guests attended to celebrate the memory of Tantansai (Mugensai), share a bowl of tea, and enjoy being together again.
Sokyo Tiscornia introduced the hosts and Vice President Allen Okamoto welcomed all to the event. Soei Bartlett, Urasenke Foundation San Francisco Director; SAKAUE Sosei; and UEDA Sobin offered flowers.
Sofu Pantsios served as the teishu (host), Sokyo Tiscornia as the hanto (assistant), and Soei Bartlett was the first guest during the first seating which began at 10:30 am.
MURAKAMI Hazuki served as the host, Sokyo Tiscornia as the assistant, and ARIMURA Yuki, the Consul of Japan in San Francisco, was the first guest during the second seating.
HOSHINO Yoshikazu served as the host, TAKECHI Soko as the assistant, and TAKAHARA Sochi was the first guest of the third seating.
Guests enjoyed a wonderful day commemorating Tantansai and his many contributions to Urasenke School of Tea.
