Chado Urasenke Tankokai SF Association Rikyuki Tea Ceremony
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Rikyuki Tea Ceremony on March 10, 2024, at Kansoan Tea Room of the Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California). The tea ceremony was hosted by Pusic Shachu, and 57 members and guests remembered the legacy of SEN Rikyu.
The tea ceremony began with words of encouragement from Mr. OSUMI Yo, Consul General of Japan in San Francisco and Mr. Allen Okamoto, Vice President of the Association.
Mr. OSUMI was the first guest and LIU HASE Soko served as the teishu (host) during the first seating followed by flower offerings by Mr. OSUMI, his son, and Soei Bartlett, Director of the Urasenke Foundation San Francisco.
HAGIWARA Sojin, the Chief of Administration of the Association, was the first guest and HOSHINO Michiyo served as the teishu during the second seating. YAMADA Sochi was the first guest and Eka Meyer served as the teishu during the third seating. Throughout all seatings, Soyo Pusic served as the hanto (assistant).
Handmade sweets titled “Uraraka” (beautiful spring day) and “Rikyu funoyaki” (crepe-like thin sweets) were served. The guests enjoyed them and one bowl of tea while appreciating the room setting suitable to remember Rikyu, founder of Senke Tea Schools.
