Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri) Tea Ceremony Demonstration

The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held a tea ceremony demonstration at the San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri) on April 8, 2023. The demonstration was hosted by TSUJI Sona and her students at Nihonmachi Little Friends in San Francisco’s Japantown.

Tianxin Wang served as teishu (host), and Heraldo Botelho was the first guest during the first seating which began at 1:00 pm.

Heraldo Botelho served as teishu and KOHAMA Saki was the first guest during the second seating.

KOHAMA Saki served as teishu and Tianxin Wang was the first guest of the third seating.

UEDA Ryosuke served as teishu and Heraldo Botelho was the first guest of the last seating which began at 4:00 pm.

KIMORI Sono served as hanto (assistant to the host) throughout all four seatings.

UEDA Ryosuke and Soryo Rueth served as the MC for the first three seatings and the last seating, respectively.

Between 50 and 100 people visited the venue at each hour and enjoyed the demonstration. Guests asked questions regarding tea utensils, kanji characters, tatami mats, or certain movements they had noticed during the demonstration, reflecting the depth of their keen interest in the Japanese culture.
