Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri) Tea Ceremony Demonstration
On Sunday, April 12, 2026, the Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held a series of tea ceremony demonstrations at Tateuchi Auditorium in San Francisco Japantown on the occasion of the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri).
This year’s demonstrations, which encompassed four seatings using the Misonodana (table) style, were hosted on behalf of the Association by Tsukamoto shachu.
Although it was a rainy and windy Sunday, which kept foot traffic low, approximately 130 people attended the tea ceremony demonstrations that celebrated springtime, and each seating served tea and sweets to 20 to 25 guests.
During the first seating, YUKI Sochoku served as teishu (host) and YAMAMOTO Yoshiko served as hanto (assistant). Junko Hartenbaum was the first guest and YAIDA Lisa was the second guest.
During the second seating, YAIDA Lisa served as teishu (host) and YUKI Sochoku served as hanto (assistant). YAMAMOTO Yoshiko was the first guest and CHATANI Mutsumi was the second guest.
During the third seating, CHATANI Mutsumi served as teishu (host) and Junko Hartenbaum served as hanto (assistant). YAIDA Lisa was the first guest and YUKI Sochoku was the second guest.
During the fourth seating, YAMAMOTO Yoshiko served as teishu (host) and CHATANI Mutsumi served as hanto (assistant). YUKI Sochoku was the first guest and Junko Hartenbaum was the second guest.
YAIDO Aya served as narrator, explaining step by step, and providing key information about the history and philosophy of chado (the way of tea) for all four seatings.
