Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association Sotanki Tea Ceremony
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Sotanki Memorial Tea Ceremony on December 3, 2023, at the Kansoan Tea Room of Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California), located in San Francisco’s Japantown. This tea ceremony gathering honored the third generation Grand Master of Urasenke School of Tea, SEN Sotan (1578-1658). In the generation of his children, the three lines of the family, Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushanokojisenke, were established.
The tea ceremony was hosted by HAGIWARA Sojin and her students and URAMOTO Sokyu and her students. The day began with flower offerings in the memory of Sotan. Three seatings of tea ceremony followed.
HAYASHI Soyu served as teishu (host), URAMOTO Sokyu served as hanto (assistant), and Mr. ARIMURA Yuki, the Consul of Japan in San Francisco was the first guest during the first seating which began at 10:30 am.
Sofu Zagol served as teishu, HAGIWARA Sojin served as hanto, and YASUDA Sokei was the first guest during the second seating.
Cyndi Chen served as teishu, URAMOTO Sokyu served as hanto, and Soyo Pusic was the first guest of the third seating.
Approximately 60 guests were in attendance. The tea ceremony was held on a sunny Sunday which helped the guests enjoy the wonderful day in memory of Sotan and his many contributions to Urasenke School of Tea.
